I do not like it Uncle Sam, I do not like it Sam I am. I do not like these dirty crooks, Neither how they cook the books. I do not like when Congress steals, I do not like their secret deals. I do not like this Speaker Nan, I do not like this "YES WE CAN!" I do not like this kind of hope, I do not like it, nope! nope, Nope!" (author unknown)
Dear Friend,
Sometimes you just have to say, loud and clear, "Enough!"
That's what we said when we recently heard about the appalling parody of my sister's tragic circumstances on an episode of Fox's "The Family Guy" program called "Terri Schiavo: The Musical." We were outraged that Fox and its sponsors would so heartlessly ridicule my sister's death by forced starvation.
Now we hope you will join us in expressing that outrage to the sponsors of "The Family Guy" by immediately signing our "Enough is Enough!" Petition. After you sign it, please send it out through your email, Facebook, My Space, or Twitter page to all of your friends, family, or fellow worshippers.
It's difficult to adequately convey the pain we felt as Terri was mocked and her agonizing suffering ridiculed. I was shocked at the complete cruelty and bigotry the program showed toward our beloved sister as well as toward the efforts of my family to care for her and attempt to save her life.
But there is an even bigger issue here.
Aside from the obvious pain this caused my family, the inferences of the program are clear: there is a growing, deep-rooted prejudice against people with brain-injuries and other cognitive disabilities.
The Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation has given encouragement and support to over 1,000 families with loved ones living with brain injuries.
If Fox Prime and its advertisers have their way, our national leaders will increasingly demand that doctors, hospitals, and families do what the characters called for at the end of "Terri Schiavo: The Musical"—pull the plug! Instead of caring for the brain-injured the message is simple: kill the brain-injured!
That's why I need you to immediately sign our "Enough is Enough!" Petition aimed at the sponsors of "The Family Guy." I will personally see to it your petitions are delivered to the company executives!
• We MUST let companies like Kentucky Fried Chicken, Dentyne, Sonic Drive-In, Sprint, and Apple Computers know that this sort of bare-faced bigotry dehumanizes those with disabilities and dismisses the efforts of those who work tirelessly to ensure that people with disabilities receive the proper care. |

U.S. Study Finds Doctors May Be Euthanizing Dying Children at Parents’ Request
By Thaddeus M. Baklinski
BOSTON, March 31, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A study published in the March edition of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine suggests that a few physicians may have killed children who were very sick by giving them fatal morphine doses, after the parents had requested euthanasia.
Dr. Joanne Wolfe, a palliative pain specialist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children's Hospital in Boston, interviewed 141 parents of children who died of cancer in order to explore the parents' motivation in considering and enquiring about hastening their child's death.
The study found that 19 of the 141 parents, or 13 percent, said they had considered asking about ending their child's life, and 13 parents reported having discussed intentionally ending their child's life. Parents of five children said they had explicitly asked a clinician for medications to end the child's life, and parents of three said it had been carried out with an overdose of morphine.
Dr. Wolfe wrote that the objective of the study was "to estimate the frequency of hastening death discussions, describe current parental endorsement of hastening death and intensive symptom management, and explore whether children's pain influences these views in a sample of parents whose child died of cancer."
"With two US states now allowing legalized physician-assisted suicide," continued Dr. Wolfe, "these discussions may become more frequent. Attitudes toward hastening death in noninfant children with life-threatening conditions have seldom been described."
Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, told LifeSiteNews (LSN) that he is seriously concerned by the finding of the study that medical professionals may have been willing to break the law and cause the death of a child in response to the request of parents.
"The fact is that if euthanasia of children were legal, such as it is in the Netherlands, there would be little to no protection for these children," Schadenberg said.
"Thankfully the actual number of children who were allegedly euthanized is small. The fact is that these children required excellent care, not death."
Dr. Wolfe observed that the child's experience of pain affects hastening death (HD) considerations by the parents, but many are not given adequate information about the legal options for pain relief, which can include sedating children into unconsciousness.
"Several studies indicate that both caregivers and physicians tend to confuse the unintended adverse effects of intensive symptom management with the intentional hastening of death. In our sample, the 3 families who reported intentionally hastening their child's death described doing so using morphine, which raises the question of whether they had misinterpreted the physicians' intentions. In fact, evidence indicates that opioids can be used safely at the end of life and that their effect on survival, if any, is negligible."
"Our results suggest that more than 1 of every 8 parents report considering HD during their child's illness, and they tended to do so if their child was in pain. In the context of an HD discussion, identifying sources of suffering and clearly explaining effective and legal options, including proportionately intensive symptom management, may ease parents' considerations of hastening their child's death," the report concluded.

Oklahoma House Passes Pro-Life Bills by Massive Margin
By John Jalsevac
March 31, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – On Monday the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed three different pro-life bills by a wide margin. The language in all three of the bills, which was drafted by the National Right to Life Committee, was originally included in a single piece of legislation passed in 2008 - but that bill was later struck down by the state Supreme Court, which decided that it violated the “single issue” rule.
The original bill has now been split up into seven different pieces of legislation, three of which have now passed both the Senate and the House, and are awaiting the governor’s signature. The other four have passed the House, and are headed to the Senate for a vote, which should occur within the next several weeks.
“We are very gratified that the Oklahoma legislature has seen fit to reenact these three bills,” said Tony Lauinger, the State Chairman for Oklahomans for Life, in an interview with LifeSiteNews.com (LSN).
“We are privileged to live in an extraordinarily pro-life state and to have very strongly pro-life legislators and we deeply appreciate their support for the protection of the unborn child.”
SB1891, sponsored by Rep. Pam Peterson, creates the Freedom of Conscience Act, thereby protecting the right of health care workers to “refuse to participate in the taking of an innocent life,” in the words of Rep. Peterson. It passed the House with a vote of 80-13.
Rep. Peterson told LSN in an interview that, “What we’re finding across the country is that nurses, nursing students, physician assistants, medical students, all kinds of people in training for the medical profession are being more and more coerced into participating in these life taking measures, and we’re hoping that Oklahoma will stand at the forefront of standing for life and protecting these health care professionals.”
Peterson also said that the recent passage of the federal health care reform bill, which pro-life leaders have criticized for not adequately protecting conscience rights, has heightened the need for legislation such as SB1891.
“I think in light of Obamacare passing, it’s all the more reason why the states need to step up to the plate and say – you know what? If you want to be a health care professional and you come to Oklahoma we’re going to protect that right,” she said.
The legislator said that there are still concerns that Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry will decide to veto the bill, as he has vetoed pro-life legislation in the past. While the bill appears to have more than enough support to override a veto in the house, Peterson said that things are not so clear-cut in the senate. “Hopefully it will pass,” she said.
SB1890, another of the three bills passed on Monday, forbids sex selective abortions, and was passed in an overwhelming 95-1 vote. It was sponsored by Rep. Dan Sullivan, who was unavailable for comment by press time.
According to ktul.com, the legislator said that “It is critical that we make sure the common practice in many countries of aborting mostly female babies does not come to our state.”
SB1902, introduced by Rep. Skye McNiel, regulates the use of the abortion drug RU-486, making it illegal for anyone other than a physician to provide or administer the drug. According to the official summary of the bill, it requires that the drug “must be administered by or in the same room and in the physical presence of the physician who prescribed it, and the physician must make a reasonable effort to ensure a follow-up appointment after the drug has been given.” It passed in a 91-7 vote.
SB1902 has been passed into law at the same time that pro-life organizations are expressing concern about the increasingly popular practice of prescribing RU-486 through a process known as “telemed,” in which a mother seeking an abortion consults with an abortionist at a remote clinic via a video-conference service. The drug is then prescribed without the woman having ever met or been examined by a physician. Earlier this week, Operation Rescue issued a report stating that Planned Parenthood of Iowa is offering medical abortions at 16 clinics, even though only four of them have a doctor on staff.
The remaining four pieces of legislation, which are awaiting approval by the senate, include one bill that would mandate comprehensive reporting about abortions - including clear reporting of complications that result from abortions. Another would require a woman to receive an ultrasound prior to an abortion, and the sonographer to describe and explain to the mother what is on the screen.
Tony Lauinger of Oklahomans for Life said that he believes that the latter measure is likely to prove the most effective measure of the group.

Then-presiding judge for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee gives first-person account of church trial
By Fr. THOMAS BRUNDAGE, JCL
For CatholicAnchor.org
To provide context to this article, I was the Judicial Vicar for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee from 1995-2003. During those years, I presided over four canonical criminal cases, one of which involved Father Lawrence Murphy. Two of the four men died during the process. God alone will judge these men.
To put some parameters on the following remarks, I am writing this article with the express knowledge and consent of Archbishop Roger Schwietz, OMI, of the Archdiocese of Anchorage, where I currently serve. Archbishop Schwietz is also the publisher of the Catholic Anchor newspaper.
I will limit my comments, because of judicial oaths I have taken as a canon lawyer and as an ecclesiastical judge. However, since my name and comments in the matter of the Father Murphy case have been liberally and often inaccurately quoted in the New York Times and in more than 100 other newspapers and on-line periodicals, I feel a freedom to tell part of the story of Father Murphy’s trial from ground zero.
