FOCA -- Freedom Of Choice Act

QUOTE:

"Watch the video and visit http://www.FightFOCA.com

Last year before the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Barack Obama told pro-abortion activists: "The first thing I'd do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act."

FOCA would establish the right to abortion as a fundamental right (like the right to free speech) and wipe away every restriction on abortion nationwide.

It will eradicate state and federal abortion laws that the majority of Americans support and prevent states from enacting similar protective measures in the future.

This is one of the videos that I tried to send via the youtube that never made it to my blog, apparently (there were about seven, but they don't tell me which ones didn't make it....grrrr) .

But this time, I have embedded it myself, because I also want to draw attention to Fight FOCA.

The USCCB has a legal analysis of FOCA's consequences here.
The NRLC has a lot of information on FOCA here, and also has more information, including a letter from Cardinal Rigali.

Catholics in the Public Square has several entries on FOCA, scroll to bottom for the earliest.

Jay Anderson has a letter from the Knights of Columbus' Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson which includes a list of laws passed over the years that will be wiped out if FOCA is passed on Pro Ecclesia * Pro Familia * Pro Civitate

In 2004, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger wrote a letter to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and stated:

"Not all moral issues have the same moral weight as abortion and euthanasia. For example, if a Catholic were to be at odds with the Holy Father on the application of capital punishment or on the decision to wage war, he would not for that reason be considered unworthy to present himself to receive Holy Communion.
While the Church exhorts civil authorities to seek peace, not war, and to exercise discretion and mercy in imposing punishment on criminals, it may still be permissible to take up arms to repel an aggressor or to have recourse to capital punishment. There may be a legitimate diversity of opinion even among Catholics about waging war and applying the death penalty, but not however with regard to abortion and euthanasia."
