Cavalier Daily Cartoons

From WVIR / Charlottesville:

The Cavalier Daily apologized Sunday for offending University of Virginia students after it published a pair of controversial religious cartoons last week.

It all started Thursday morning when students opened the paper and saw a cartoon of Jesus on the cross making jokes like he's in a stand-up comedy show.

On Friday, in the "Letters to the Editor" section, a student wrote in about his distaste of the comic.

Not helping the situation, the student-run newspaper published another cartoon, this one depicting a sexual encounter with the Virgin Mary.

The story is continued at their website.

The Catholic League was on this the same day that the Daily Cavalier published the second offensive cartoon. I really don't want to go into describing the cartoon here, but you can read all about it on their site.

There were apparently two cartoons, one on Mar 13 and another on Mar 14. Both are now removed from the website at the newspaper. The comment by the publishers was updated on Mar 15.

From the newspaper website:

Cavalier Daily statement regarding recent comics

The Cavalier Daily sincerely regrets any offense readers may have taken to two recent comics in the strip TCB published March 13 and 14. The content of the Comics page reflects neither the views of the Managing Board nor of The Cavalier Daily as an institution. When the comics were considered for publication, they were deemed to have met The Cavalier Daily's censorship criteria, which can be found at this address. It is never the intention of The Cavalier Daily to offend, and we regret having done so.

UPDATE (3/15/08): In light of recent and previous concerns, The Cavalier Daily will be reviewing its comics policy.

Comic artists' statement regarding recent comics

The comic artists responsible for the March 13 and 14 TCB comic strips decline to comment on their work at this time.

As noted by The Catholic League, the cartoons have been removed from the Cavalier Daily website:

The title of the cartoon is TCB, and the 'artists' are:

HOWEVER, this is not the FIRST time that they have done this... In 2006, just as school was beginning, there were others...

This was also addressed other places back in 2006, including here
and at least three different blog posts at Jay Anderson's Pro Ecclesia * Pro Familia * Pro Civitate..... as he has also covered the CURRENT situation here...
AND it was addressed by Crosswalk at the time...

In Catalyst from Oct 2007, the author of those offending cartoons is treated DIFFERENTLY when he offends some other group!

For those who want to know what the 2006 cartoons were all about...you can find a commentary on one of them here, and the 'permanent home' of the three at the same site.
