Media Bias in Terri Schiavo Case at Extreme Levels in AP, Reuters Reports

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- With the world's attention focused on Terri Schiavo, the media has picked up on the story of her plight. However, some say the bias in the news reporting has reached extreme levels as media outlets attempt to shape public opinion in favor of starving her to death.

One Associated Press article released Monday, "World Opinion Divided Over Schiavo," did less to gather the opinion of world leaders on the controversial case and more to paint a false picture that world religions universally oppose the actions of President Bush and Congress to save Terri's life.

While the news article mentioned the Vatican's opposition to Terri's starvation, the rest of the piece interviewed Islamic and Jewish thinkers who favor starving Terri.

The Monday AP report closed with comments from a leader of a Dutch pro-euthanasia group and quoted a German newspaper accusing American political leaders of using Terri's case for political gain.

Other than a couple of comments from a Vatican newspaper, the article contained no quotes or attributions from world leaders or religious thinkers who oppose starving Terri.

Raimundo Rojas, the Hispanic outreach director for the National Right to Life Committee, has been following the Terri Schiavo sage closely.

"The press has the facts wrong, they have consistently used the wrong language, and there is a repeated effort in all that you read and here in the media an urgency to sway the American people that Terri is somehow less then human," Rojas told LifeNews.com.

"As American troops began their successful siege of Baghdad, the Iraqi Minister of Information declared that there were no Americans in Baghdad and that if there were they were hurling themselves from the city walls," Rojas explained. "This same kind of blind, monolithic, type of reporting is what we are seeing the mainstream media in regard to Terri Schindler."

Meanwhile, a Reuters piece appearing in hundreds of newspapers and on news web sites Monday claimed Terri "will almost certainly never recover from her unconscious condition" and added that "neurologists agree."

The experts included a 10 year-old report on persistent vegetative cases and two doctors who have never seen Terri to evaluate her, but presumed she was in a PVS state and that she, like other PVS patients, has no chance to regain any normal cognitive functions.

The Reuters news story made no mention of the dozens of doctors who signed affidavits in favor of motions submitted by Terri Schiavo's parents to have Terri tested before she was starved to death.

The article also did not feature quotes from any doctors who disagree that Terri is in a PVS state -- such as Dr. William Hammesfahr, a Nobel Prize nominated neurologist who is an internationally recognized expert on cases of brain-injured patients.
"We, and others I know, have treated many patients worse than Terri and have seen them regain independence and dignity," Hammesfahr said earlier this month.

"There are many approaches that would help Terri Schiavo," Dr. Hammesfahr explained. "I know, because I had the opportunity to personally examine her, her medical records, and her X-rays."

The Reuters article also failed to mention that Michael has withheld appropriate medical care or rehabilitative treatment for Terri for years.

"From Los Angeles to Miami to New York, the press, for the most part has become Michael Schiavo's and George Felos' propaganda machine," Rojas concluded.

The one thing I definitely get from reading all these "opinions" is:

Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the light

The unbeliever does not understand as the scriptures so tell us. The ways of God are foolishness to a non believer.

Amen,
Regarding what Jesus says about harming the "least of these".

Thanks for those comments. Some I have never read. I am also reminded of Johna Admas comment regarding the constitution:

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other."

As we are seeing right before our eyes, our constitution is no longer what the founding fathers intended.

It has been hijacked by activist judges who CREATE law, then say that our Legislative and Executive Branches have no right to act in our system of checks and balances when they rule.

I am so sorry for all those who love Terri and are in pain now. I suggest you use the media strongly to bring your case to each and every person who may or may not be aware of what is going on. We have death penalities in many states yet never use them. In CT we have a mass murderer who WANTS to die and the courts are refusing his request and keeping him from the death penalty. We keep murderers from dieing and let those who are innocent die by the decisions of a court. SHOW PICTURES OF TERRI IN EVERY MEDIA YOU CAN. SHOW the people of the world what it looks like to die slowly by starvation and deprivation of liquids. If she must die, SHOW her doing so in order to let people see how cruel her slow death truly is. I am completely FOR the death penalty but I am horrified that the courts would allow someone to die in such a slow and cruel fashion. They even put some people to death by injection, a much more humane way than the courts are choosing for Terri. If you let the people of the world actually witness the slow death of Terri I believe there will be an outcry from the people at large to stop this from happening. For once, use the media to help you in your fight to save Terri. I honestly believe this may save her life and urge you to immediately consider this option and act upon it as soon as you possibly can. Use video tapes if you must - just let everyone go through what the court is putting Terri through. Don't let people just imagine what it will be like, let them live, and die, with Terri in front of them. I wish you all the best. Arly Kovelesky

Arly Kovelesky,

Video and regular cameras are not allowed in Terri's room by anyone by guardian's order and by court order. What you propose would help MANY to see Truth, but it can't be done. And I am not sure it would help as much as we think, as the people who can't LOOK at TERRI the PERSON would not watch. Many have a hard time seeing, being around, and understanding that the disabled are HUMAN BEINGS with the same rights that they have, and are protected by laws no one is using for Terri, like the American Disabilities Act, etc. God bless you, Arly.
