Down, Hero Dad and Palin By Leticia Velasquez
So many babies that have a 'poor' diagnosis die by abortion. The joys that they can add to everyone's life is minimized, while the responsibilities are over-emphasized, and the 'quality of life' is added to the pile. But that 'quality of life' is not the child's that is thought of, though supporters of this type of genocide will tell you that it is. What is really being taken into account is the problems that child will cause for society, and the pain that will be felt by others, disrupting THEIR 'quality of life'.
The latest thinking on the subject of 'quality of life' is not for the individual, who is given no real choice in the matter, but how others VIEW what they perceive to be a life that is not 'normal'. 'They' perceive suffering, and 'they' can't handle it, or do not want to, so therefore, the individual is living a life that is 'too hard', 'too uncomfortable', 'too painful'...and the most damning ... "I wouldn't want to live that way"... sometimes couched in terms of the individual 'not wanting to live this way'.
So, babies are aborted, disabled are starved, dehydrated to death. They are inconvenient. They are not productive. They are expensive. Where did this thinking make its debut? In the T4 Program of Nazi Germany, begun by a father who asked the court system for 'Mercy' on his disabled son. MANY died as a result of that court order.
But, then there are Dads like Thomas Vander Woude. (And Moms like Leticia and Sarah Palin)
Thomas Vander Woude, a Virginia farmer, devout Catholic, and 66-year-old father of seven. Just a few days before, Tom saw his beloved 20-year-old son Joseph fall into a sewer, where he struggled to breathe, immersed in filth. Without hesitating, Tom dove into the sewer, holding his son’s head up so he could be rescued, sacrificing his life for a young man whom 90% of expectant parents reject; Josie has Down syndrome. Sen. Brownback told Tom’s extraordinary story in his speech.Thomas Vander Woude’s mighty expression of fatherly love, combined with Sarah Palin’s gentle example of motherly love — refusing to abort a child whose birth complicated her career as governor of Alaska — brought this once forsaken little bill to victory in the Senate.
The power of courageous love had inspired a lackluster, morally bankrupt Senate to a great act — for which it will be long remembered.

Thank you for quoting me in your blog, and for pairing me with Sarah the bold. So glad she found a home on Fox News where I can hear from her regularly, since her book tour didn't reach CT.
By the way, this time last year I met Tom Vanderwoude's eldest son, Fr Tom from Queen of All Saints Parish in Alexandria VA. Another saintly member of a holy family. Father has access to Senators and other notables and is a clear voice for life and Catholic morality in the public square.
Leticia,
Fr Vanderwoude is my sister's pastor. I did not connect him with his father for some reason, though I am sure my sister HAD to have mentioned it, but was aware of Tom Vanderwoude's courageous action to save his son from shortly after it happened. I thought that I had blogged about him, but cannot find it in the archives.
God bless!
