Fwd: Kohl Says He Opposes Abortion Funding But Was He Being Truthful

Sen. Kohl Tells Audience at Marquette He Opposes Government-Funding of Abortion
But How Will He Actually Vote on the Nelson-Hatch Amendment?
Call Senator Kohl IMMEDIATELY and Hold Him to His Word!

Monday, December 7, 2009
U.S. Senator Herb Kohl has long been a supporter of pro-abortion causes and received a 100% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America.  That is why right-to-life attendees at a September  Marquette University forum were extremely surprised to hear Sen. Kohl state that he opposes government funded abortion in health care legislation.

On September 2, 2009 at Marquette University Law School's "On the Issues with Mike Gousha," Kohl responded to Marquette grad, Dan Zeidler, who asked the senator if he would vote against abortion in the health care reform legislation..

Zeidler, a long-time right to life leader, asked Sen. Kohl the following question: "I do not want health care to be used as a vehicle to expand abortion access.  It is very clear, very clear, that many in the congress want to do that, many from your party.  Will you vote against any abortion mandates?  Will you explicitly exclude them from any health care reform bill?"

Kohl responded, "I want to say, but it's complicated, but I want to say categorically yes.  I agree with you.  We should not be using health care reform to provide government access to abortion.  I hear what you say.  And I would hope that people from whatever party won't try and go down that road and put into a bill in the dead of night and then, lo and behold, wake up the next morning and something that shouldn't have happened did happen.  We should not do that."

The entire exchange between Dan Zeidler and Sen. Kohl can be viewed at http://law.marquette.edu/flash/gousha-20090902.html     The exchange occurred near the end of the forum at approximately 50 minutes into the presentation.  Zeidler also asked to work with Sen. Kohl on the matter and Kohl readily agreed.  However, after numerous attempts by Zeidler to schedule an appointment with Sen. Kohl, a meeting still has not taken place.

ACTION NEEDED
Senator Kohl has the opportunity to make good on the promise he made to the people who attended the September 2 Marquette forum by voting for the Nelson-Hatch Amendment to the Senate version of health care reform legislation.  That amendment would prevent the proposed new government health insurance program from paying for abortions.  It would also prevent federal funds from being used to subsidize the purchase of private health plans that pay for elective abortion.

YOU MUST CALL SENATOR KOHL  IMMEDIATELY - THE VOTE ON THE NELSON-HATCH AMENDMENT WILL TAKE PLACE AT ANY TIME!  TELL HIM YOU EXPECT HIM TO BE TRUE TO WHAT HE TOLD THE MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY AUDIENCE ON SEPTEMBER 2 BY VOTING FOR THE NELSON HATCH AMENDMENT.
